Golden spike ogden utah12/15/2023 ![]() ![]() There are bathrooms around the front of the visitor's center, outside. If you are approaching from the north, it feels like this place is in the middle of nowhere, but it is just north of the Great Salt Lake. There is an arch of benches along the railroad where the trains arrive, so there is a lot of seating. The staff is interesting and helpful and cal tell you a lot if you have questions. There is a lot to see, books to look at, and souvenirs to consider and purchase. We waited about an hour for the first one since we showed up at 9AM, but you can lose a lot of time in the visitor's center. It's definitely worth waiting around for. I am sure there are other times later in the day too. ![]() I'm not 100% sure on the times, but the time stamp on my photos say around 10:00 and 10:30 for the two train arrivals. There is a nice place to picnic in the shade just outside of the visitor's center, with picnic tables. The film inside the visitor's center was unfortunately not available (on Aug 15, 2020). It's pretty exciting - especially if you're into history or just love trains. They are housed a little way away from the visitor's center, and come around the corner, on the railroad, blowing their horns and tooting. With COVID, I wasn't sure if anything would be going on, but the recreated 119 and Jupiter trains were running and there was a ranger talk before each one showed up. Golden Spike National Historical Park was a lovely surprise! I had no idea what to expect and had not done any research beforehand. During August it's hot but humidity is nothing, so it's a good heat, it won't hurt you much.īuy an annual national parks pass so you can get into these treasures in UT without paying entrance fees. They operate two train replicas of the originals that met at the missing gap where they hammered in the golden spike to signal the completion of the Trans RR. As I left I felt a huge lump of US American pride that our nation accomplished this huge impossible task. The history is so worth going here to learn what happened and how. i love US history and had to get a photo reproduction of the two trains meeting to frame it for my US history wall. The park store has water for sale and cool gifts. Nothing but open fields/plains and giant mountains in the distance on super flat land and of all places in this barren desert area you find this gem. It is seriously crazily out in the middle of absolute NOWHERE. It was a huge suprise for us to learn that as we visited the Salt Lake region that it was right there under our noses. I always knew about the transcontinental RR but never knew where it was or who did it or how. ![]()
